לפני עליתו לישראל, לורנס פרידמן עבד כסטטיסטיקאי במועצה למחקר רפואי הבריטי (British Medical Research Council) באנגליה וגם במכון לסרטן הארצי בארה"ב (National Cancer Institute), כמנהל הענף לביומטריה מ1993 עד 1996.

הוא נכלל בצוות שפיתח את ה Women's Health Initiative ואת ה AARP Nutritional Cohort Study. בנוסף היה העורך הראשון של העיתון הבין לאומי Statistics in Medicine וגם שרת כעורך של Biometrics. הוא עזר להקים את ה Eastern Mediterranean Region of the International Biometrics Society ושרת כנשיא הראשון של האזור. מ-1996 עד 2006 הוא היה יושב ראש וועדת ההיגוי לפרויקט המשותף ברישום בסרטן של ה Middle East Cancer Consortium ופירסם עם אחרים מונוגרף על היארעות הסרטן במזרח התיכון.

סך הכול הוא פירסם כ-250 מאמרים על מחקרים רפואיים שונים ועל מתודולוגיה וסטטיסטיקה יישומית.

אקדמאי

לורנס פרידמן סיים את התואר הראשון (BA) במתמטיקה מאוניברסיטת Cambridge באנגליה בשנת 1969. לאחר שסיים את התואר הראשון שלו המשיך במסלול אקדמאי. ב 1971 קיבל דיפלומה בסטטיסטיקה מאת University College, London, ובשנת 1974 הוא קיבל תואר שני ((MAׂ מאוניברסיטת Cambridge באנגליה. את הדוקטורט שלו בביוסטטיבטיקה הוא קבל מאותה האוניברסיטה בשנת 1999.
